MARQUETTE–The gifts are piling up as the membership rolls of The Mining Journal Christmas Cheer Club continue to swell. “We have 145 on our list who are seeking assistance this year and more are welcome to come in,” said a Salvation Army volunteer who asked not to be named. Criteria for eligibility differ in each case. “Perhaps a family’s income is average but circumstances during the year have left them in need,” the volunteer said. The evaluation doesn’t take long, the spokeswoman said. Many people are initially uneasy asking for help, she added, but “we make them feel comfortable by telling them that you never know when you might find yourself on the other side of the door. And oftentimes, the following year, they return to help others–ringing bells, distributing baskets, making donations. They return to help the next guy who needs it.”
