MARQUETTE — Marquette County Commissioners voted unanimously this week to implement the 911 emergency telephone district. Included in the district are telephone exchanges in Big Bay, Michigamme, Champion, Ishpeming, Negaunee, Marquette, Sand River, Skandia, Gwinn, Republic, and the Watson exchange in Ewing Township. County officials expect the system to be operating by 1992. It will be funded through collection of a portion of voter-approved millage and monthly surcharges on resident’s telephones. The commissioners also: Approved a recommendation from the county airport committee to conduct a marketing study on air service at the Marquette County Airport. The study, which will be funded on a 50/50 basis between the county and the state, will address whether air service can be improved at Marquette County Airport.
