MARQUETTE — Ruth Berg of Channing, a student at Northern Michigan University’s School of Cosmetology, won the Fall Update ’89 statewide competition at Mission Pointe, Mackinac Island. Berg, who is studying under Rosemarie Strom and Myra Christian, received the Student Master’s Award for the highest point total in five categories of hair cutting and styling. Her daughter, Cheryl, a sophomore at North Dickinson High School, was her subject during the competition. Berg expects to complete her year-long training program in January. This competition was sponsored by the Michigan Cosmetology Association and Crown Beauty Supply Co. of Grand Rapids.

MARQUETTE — For the fifth straight year, Marquette enjoyed a safe and sane Hallowe’en. Chief of Police Don McCormick said this year’s observance was “the best yet.” No reports of trouble or vandalism were received by the police department and no calls were received by the fire department. “In fact,” McCormick said, “we noticed very little traffic around town.” The chief attributed the quiet observance to the outstanding program arranged for the holiday by the city recreation department. Morgan Gingrass, recreation director, said no attendance figures were kept, but added that capacity crowds attended the free skating party at the Palestra and the teen-age dance at the Waterfront. The free movie show at the Graveraet High School also was well attended. Lions Club members were in charge of the dance and Kiwanis Club members had charge of the concession at the Palestra. In both cases, refreshments were sold “at cost.” Parent-Teacher Assn. members supervised the program at the high school.
