Reading group to meet Thursday

MARQUETTE — The Transition Marquette County Reading Group will meet to discuss “Consolations” by David Whyte at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Dandelion Cottage Room at Peter White Public Library in Marquette.

“Consolations” is a set of brief reflections on 52 ordinary words — alone, courage, denial, friendship, shadow, vulnerability, work, among them.

“It’s a different kind of book for us,” said Charlie West, Reading Group organizer, in a press release. “Usually we’re reading about some troubling issue — climate change, economic inequality or cultural decline. This book is about life and how to live it well.”

David Whyte is an English poet who now lives in the Pacific Northwest. He travels and lectures throughout the world, giving readings and sharing his idea of conversational leadership and life. His books include “The Heart Aroused: Poetry and the Preservation of the Soul in Corporate America.”

The Transition Marquette County Reading Group meets on the second Thursday of each month to discuss books reflecting the Mission Statement: “Transition Marquette County promotes creative, compassionate, resilient communities in Northern Michigan. Our goals include nurturing individual and community self-reliance especially in the areas of food, health, water, energy and housing. Anyone is welcome to participate.”

It would help to have at least started to read the book. For more information, call West at 906-226-3314 or email mqtchaz@gmail.com.
