County budget, millages to be considered

MARQUETTE — The Marquette County Board of Commissioners will hold its annual meeting at 6 p.m. today in room 231 of the Henry A. Skewis Courthouse Annex to approve the proposed fiscal year 2020 budgets amounting to roughly $63.8 million and consider the millage rates to be levied.

The budgets to be considered are the capital improvements budget in the amount of $530,800, the general fund budget in the amount of roughly $25.35 million and other county fund budgets totaling about $36.96 million.

The property tax millage rate proposed to be levied for the various taxing units to support this budget is 7.62 mills, the same operating tax millage rate levied in 2018. The proposed millage rate will increase operating revenues from ad valorem property taxes approximately 1.5% over such revenues generated by levies permitted without holding a hearing. A public hearing to adopt the Truth in Taxation Resolution, which allows the revenue increase, and the General Appropriations Act Resolution, which appropriates the millages, will be held before the board votes on the items.

The millage will be levied against the county’s taxable value in the amount of:

≤ 5.29 mills for general operating

≤ .6 mill for countywide transit

≤ .44 mill for aging services

≤ .49 mill for central dispatch

≤ .15 mill for rescue safety

≤ .08 mill for veteran’s affairs

≤ .55 mill for Medicaid standardization

At the meeting the board will also establish the annual salary of each county officer and appoint an individual to the Department of Human Services Board.
