L’ANSE — Two boxes of radioactive material that bounced off a hospital delivery truck were found and taken home by a Houghton resident, state police said today. The small containers, holding low-level radioactive chemicals for hospital use, landed on the road somewhere in L’Anse Sunday when the tailgate of the truck fell open, state police Trooper Bob Love said. Rita Massie said her son, Roger, 20, found the boxes on a downtown street. She was not too concerned, despite the radioactive warning labels on the packages. “They’re on my kitchen table now,” she said. “I figure they’re safe as long as they’re not opened.” Love said he did not believe the family had been exposed to danger. Just in case, L’Anse village police drove to Houghton today to pick up the boxes. Love said he did not know the identity of the delivery truck that had dropped the boxes. The truck had just left Baraga County Memorial Hospital in L’Anse.
