Second Street Sauna reopens

MARQUETTE — Yoopers are no strangers to saunas, but for those who don’t have one in their backyard, there’s Second Street Sauna, a public sauna house in Marquette.

The sauna first opened in 1926 and recently came under new ownership in February. Claes and SJ Adler officially reopened what they call “Second Date Sauna,” as it’s where they had their second date. They plan to continue to offer the classic sauna experience for locals and visitors, they said.

“We’re excited that people are excited that it’s like a traditional thing that they can come do,” SJ Adler said. “Somebody called it their Yooper experience. They make this one of their stops when they come up here to do the U.P.”

Since purchasing, the Adlers have completed renovations on the residential portion of the building, but nothing to the saunas. Eventually they plan to put in new tile flooring and maybe a few other minor renovations, but overall they want to leave the business unchanged.

“Any of the updates and things we want to do down there, we want to keep it pretty traditional,” Claes Adler said. “Nothing too radically different; we like the old world charm to it.”

“People like it to be kind of old and unfinished looking down there,” SJ Adler added.

The Adlers hope the community tries the saunas, which they believe to release toxins from the body and promote relaxation.

Prices at the sauna are $20 an hour for one person and $5 per additional person.

As of now, Second Street Sauna is by reservation only, but the Adlers plan to offer regular business hours in the future.

The couple are also searching for interested community members to help them host a family-friendly, free haunted sauna in October.
