Woman, child injured in ATV crash

MARQUETTE — Two people were taken to the hospital after a four-wheeler rollover crash in Sands Township Thursday evening, according to the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office.

The accident occurred around 6:11 p.m. Thursday when a green 2005 Arctic Cat 400 four-wheeler was eastbound on a two-track trail on the north side of County Road 480 near Cherry Creek Road and left the trail, tipping on its side, police said.

The driver, a 27-year-old Gwinn woman, prevented the four-wheeler from completely rolling over by holding the four-wheeler up with her legs. She sustained back injuries, while a 10-year-old girl from Gwinn, who was the passenger, sustained minor injuries to her stomach as a result of the crash, according to the sheriff’s office.

Both the driver and the passenger were wearing helmets and were transported to UP Health System-Marquette for their injuries. They are currently in stable condition, police said, but names were not released.

The crash remains under investigation.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Sands Township Fire Department, Sands Township Emergency Medical Services and the Chocolay Township Police Department.
