Pilot found deceased after crash

ONTONAGON — A pilot was found deceased at 3 p.m. Sunday after the Ontonagon County Sheriff’s Office and the Gogebic County Sheriff’s Department received information on Saturday related to a possible missing airplane.

The aircraft had departed the Gogebic County Airport and was destined for the Ontonagon County Airport, but did not arrive as scheduled, police said.

The Gogebic County Sheriff’s Department obtained the coordinates of the pilot’s last known cell phone location and with the assistance of civil air patrol, “a more definitive location was obtained,” according to the Ontonagon County Sheriff’s Office.

A ground search team comprised of law enforcement officers from the Ontonagon County Sheriff’s Office, the Gogebic County Sheriff’s Department, the U.S. Forest Service, the Michigan State Police Wakefield Post, the Porcupine Mountains State Park and the Rockland Township Fire Department performed a ground search in an “extremely remove and inaccessible area” of Carp Lake Township in Ontonagon County, with assistance from the Civil Air Patrol, which provided an aircraft, police said.

The aircraft was eventually located by ground search personnel, who found the pilot and sole occupant, identified as Jack Maccani, 36, of Ironwood, deceased at the scene around 3 p.m. Sunday.
