Board to consider extending township manager’s contract

Girard

MARQUETTE — The Marquette Township Board will consider extending its contract with Township Manager Randy Girard during a 6:30 p.m. meeting Tuesday at the Marquette Township Community Center.

Girard is requesting a five-month extension to his current two-year contract, which expires Dec. 31, according to an Aug. 13 memo to board members. If approved, the measure would mean Girard could retire on June 1, 2020.

“This request is to provide the board opportunity for sufficient time to complete the transition and orientation of the new superintendent of public works and to provide the board sufficient time for recruitment, placement and orientation of a new township manager,” the memo states.

The township recently hired Jon Kangas, who currently holds the township manager position in Chocolay Township, to replace Superintendent of Public Works Kirk Page, who is retiring Dec. 31.

The township accepted sealed proposals for executive search services for the township manager position until Aug. 13.

The project entails implementing a screening process to identify candidates that “most closely” meet the needs of the township, and building consensus with the township board on “an ideal candidate profile,” documents state.

The board will also consider a roughly $31,500 expenditure for a pickup truck to replace the existing public works service truck, which, according to agenda documents, is in poor condition.
