1 dead, 1 injured in L’Anse crash

L’ANSE — One woman was pronounced dead at the scene and another woman was hospitalized after an accident occurred in L’Anse Township Monday morning.

Around 8 a.m., deputies from the Baraga County Sheriff’s Office responded to a fatal accident on U.S. 41 at the Red Rocks area. A southbound vehicle driven by 59-year-old JoAnne Hilsendager of L’Anse crossed the centerline and collided with a northbound semi-truck driven by 57-year-old Brian Williams of Baraga. Hilsendager was pronounced dead at the scene. The semi driver was not hurt.

A third vehicle, driven by 75-year-old Paul Kaurala of Pelkie, tried to avoid the accident and went into the ditch. Kaurala’s passenger, 82-year-old Delores Perala, also of Pelkie, was injured and transported to Baraga County Memorial Hospital by Bay Ambulance.

The portion of U.S. 41 between L’Anse and Baraga was shut down from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. for an accident reconstructionist from the Michigan State Police to process the scene and for crews from the Michigan Department of Transportation to clean up the fuel spill from the semi truck.
