Wallberg pleads not guilty to child abusive commercial activity charges

By Journal Staff

MARQUETTE — An Ishpeming man has pleaded not guilty to multiple felony charges of child abusive commercial activity and using a computer to commit a crime.

Rodney Thomas Wallberg, 66, pleaded not guilty to five counts of child abusive commercial activity and five counts of using a computer to commit a crime and waived his arraignment in Marquette’s 25th Circuit Court Thursday.

Each count of using a computer to commit a crime carries a maximum prison sentence of 20 years and/or a $20,000 fine. Each count of child abusive commercial activity is punishable by up to 20 years in prison and/or a $100,000 fine, police said previously.

Further court dates will be set in a scheduling conference, court officials said Friday.

Wallberg was arrested March 21 and arraigned on the 10 felony counts in 96th District Court March 25, court documents state.

The charges stem from an investigation by Michigan State Police Computer Crimes Unit Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force that revealed Wallberg had been downloading child sexually abusive material at his residence, police said previously.

The task force worked closely with the Michigan State Police Negaunee Post and the Ishpeming Township Police Department in the investigation, officials said.
