Police ID fatal crash victims; family fundraiser set for tonight
MARQUETTE — Police have released the names of three Marquette relatives who were involved in a fatal traffic accident in St. Ignace Friday, as a fundraiser for the victims’ family will take place tonight.
Tonight’s Escanaba at Negaunee high school hockey game to be played at the Negaunee Ice Arena will serve as a fundraiser for the Johnson family.
The family lost two of its members in a traffic accident in St. Ignace over the weekend.
According to the St. Ignace Police Department, a car driven by Jacob Johnson, 18, of Marquette, was leaving Java Joe’s restaurant on North State Street to turn left and head south, but collided with a northbound pickup truck near South Airport Road.
Jacob Johnson died from his injuries Sunday at McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital. Will Johnson, 22, who was the front seat passenger in the vehicle, passed away about 2.5 hours after the crash at the Mackinac Straits Hospital in St. Ignace.
Kyle Johnson, 16, of Marquette, who was the back seat passenger, was taken to the Mackinac Straits Hospital and later transported to McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital in “serious condition,” police said.
The pickup truck was driven by Meghann Colegrove, 28, of St. Ignace, who was treated at Mackinac Straits Hospital and released, according to police.
The crash remains under investigation at this time, police said, and anyone with information is asked to call the St. Ignace police at 906-643-6977.
Will was Jake’s uncle, and Jake’s brother Kyle was seriously injured in the accident and hospitalized.
All gate fees and 50/50 sales from today’s 7 p.m. game will be donated to the Johnsons, according to Miners head coach Dale Hopper.
In addition, a GoFundMe.com account has been set up online to help the family with various expenses.
