Livestrong starts Monday

MARQUETTE — The winter session of Livestrong at the YMCA starts Monday.

The goals of the Livestrong at the YMCA program are to empower adult cancer survivors to improve functional capacity and to increase their quality of life through an organized program of fitness and strength.

The free program is a 12-week, small group physical activity program led by specially trained Livestrong at the YMCA Instructors. Through the use of individual personal assessments which take into account the medical and social histories of the participants, these Instructors create a physical activity plan tailored to each Livestrong at the YMCA participant.

As participants execute this plan, they are put on a path to build muscle mass and strength, increase flexibility and endurance, and improve overall functional ability. Participants build cardiovascular endurance, core muscular strength and endurance, core flexibility, and balance, which may help improve functional ability, reduce the severity of therapy side effects, prevent unwanted weight changes, and improve energy levels and self-esteem.

Class will take place Mondays and Wednesdays 1-2:30 p.m. Potential participants must schedule a pre-class assessment and intake interview. Call Christina Bennett at 906-227-9622 to schedule. There is no cost to this class.

Balance class starts Tuesday

MARQUETTE — A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls is a program for people with concerns about falling.

Fear of falling can be just as dangerous as falling itself. People who develop this fear often limit their activities, which can result in severe physical weakness, making the risk of falling even greater. Many older adults also experience increased isolation and depression when they limit their interactions with family and friends. A Matter of Balance can help people improve their quality of life and remain independent. A Matter of Balance is designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels among older adults.

UPCAP/U.P. Area Agency on Aging will be offering an eight-week Matter of Balance class on Tuesdays from 10 a.m.-noon beginning on Feb. 6 and ending March 27. The class will be held at the Lakeview Arena Citizens Forum, 401 E. Fair Ave., Marquette. There is no cost to attend, but pre-registration is required. For more information or to register, call 906-225-4615.
