Snowmobile safety course set

GWINN — The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office and the Forsyth Township Snowmobile Club are hosting a snowmobile safety course in the Gwinn area for those ages 12-16.

The course in Forsyth Township will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 29 at the Forsyth Township Snowmobile Clubhouse, located .6 miles east of Kountry Korners, along the north side of M-35.

Graduates of the course receive a snowmobile safety certificate from the sheriff’s office.

Snowmobile safety education training and online safety courses are recommended for all snowmobile operators and are required for youth between the ages of 12 and 16 years.

A person who is at least 12 but less than 17 years of age must successfully complete a Michigan-approved snowmobile safety course if they will be:

≤ Operating a snowmobile without the direct supervision of a person 21 years of age or older. Certificate must be in operator’s immediate possession.

≤ Crossing any highway or street. Certificate must be in operator’s immediate possession.

The course is limited to 24 students, with spots filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Call Todd Lundstrom at 906-362-1168 to reserve a place in the class.

All course materials will be provided free of charge. Students should bring a sack lunch, if desired. Hot cocoa, pop and popcorn will be provided at no charge. Parents and guardians are encouraged to participate in the course, but this is not required.
