MARQUETTE — The nearest skateboard competitions may be in Milwaukee and Chicago, but that doesn’t dampen the enthusiasm of four Marquette teens for the sport. Pat Abramson, John Schrei, Mike Titters and Jason Jilbert displayed the 34-foot-long, 16-foot-wide and 8-foot-high “half pipe” ramp that Pat, Mike and Jason built in the Jilbert backyard with the help of Doug York. The project was completed over the course of a month last spring, working after school and on weekends. The safety conscious youths always wear helmets, knee pads and elbow pads when riding the big ramp. They also “street skate” on sidewalks and driveways. Abramson demonstrated as he cut a turn at the upper edge of the “half pipe,” while Abramson and Schrei vaulted off a smaller sidewalk ramp.

MARQUETTE — After a lapse of one year, Jackie Specker is again women’s champion of the Marquette Golf & Country Club. Mrs. Specker won the golf match from Mrs. Jean Thomsen, 5-4, in the finals of the club’s 29th annual tournament Aug. 28 to succeed Mrs. Louise Beldo as No. 1 women’s player. Taking medalist honors with an 88, the 26-year-old office worker downed Millie Johnson, 5-4, in the first match, and Mrs. St. Germain, 7-6, in the semi-finals. The 1957 titlist had won the tournament from 1952 through 1955 before losing a quarter-final match to Mrs. Mary Ann St. Germain last year.
