2-vehicle crash in Sands Township

MARQUETTE — The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office investigated a two-vehicle crash resulting in minor injuries that occurred at 8:35 a.m. Tuesday on M-553 south of County Road NY near the Marquette County Fairgrounds in Sands Township.

A 2012 Chevrolet four-door vehicle driven by Escanaba resident Dominique Bougie, 23, was traveling north in a pack of vehicles when they slowed due to slippery conditions. Bougie also slowed but lost control of her vehicle, crossing the center line into the path of a 2015 Ford driven by Craig West, 36, of Marquette.

Heavy snow was falling and the roads were considered icy and slippery, and both vehicles sustained heavy damage. Officers attributed the use of safety belts and the vehicles’ airbags in reducing the severity of injuries.

Bougie was determined to be at fault in the crash and was cited for violation of the basic speed law-too fast for conditions.

Assisting at the scene were a Michigan State Police motor carrier, Sands Township Fire and EMS, Upper Peninsula Health System-Marquette EMS, Forsyth Township Police Chief Gordie Warchock and passersby.
