MARQUETTE – The Marquette central office switchboard has been provided with equipment which indicates to telephone users that the bell of the called party is being rung, according to K. B. Baker, manager here for the Michigan Bell Telephone company. The new service is known as “audible ringing” and will go into operation today. The audible ringing signal is a “burr-burr-rr-ring” sound. This sound, heard at irregular intervals, indicates that the bell of the called telephone is being rung. The use of this signal will make it unnecessary for the operator to give the calling party a verbal report that she is ringing the called party or that they don’t answer, as has been the practice heretofore. Mr. Baker reports that there are 3,000 telephones in operation in the Marquette exchange and that about 16,000 local calls are being answered each day. In addition, 350 long distance calls originate in this exchange daily, many of them to distant points outside the state of Michigan.

Two checkpoints, one at Bancroft and one at the prison, are part of a statewide traffic count and evaluation being made by the state highway department to get information needed for the planning of highway interchanges. Automatic counters with cords across the road can only count the number of vehicles passing by. In order to plan an adequate interchange, it is necessary to know where people are going, whether they plan to make stops and what kind of vehicle they are driving.
