NEGAUNEE – The Negaunee eighth grade boys’ team captured the Marquette County Junior High School Basketball Championship by defeating Ishpeming in the title game, 35-31, Ishpeming’s first loss of the season. Members of the championship team are: Kurt LaMere, Tony Jacobetti, Shawn Borlace, Dan Skewis, Andy Harju, Curt Beauchaine, manager Kris Taskila, manager Greg Toutant, Chris Cape, Steve McCormick, Jon Matthews, Jon Stambaugh, Gary Salo, Chris Waara, Paul Melka, Jason Montgomery, and coach Dick Carlson.

MARQUETTE – The U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division completed mass mailing of new wage-hour posters and information concerning the $1 per hour federal minimum wage which becomes effective on March 1. Regional Director William S. Stingley announced that approximately 75,000 posters have been mailed to employers in Ohio and Michigan who are known to be covered by the wage and hour law for display in their establishments as required by the record keeping regulations.

NEGAUNEE – It was a rough day for Negaunee High School students Marty DeFant and Tim Weingarten. They got a sobering experience Thursday in the Marquette County Jail. The students, both members of Negaunee High School’s Students Against Driving Drunk organization, volunteered to go through the entire arrest routine usually experienced by persons suspected of drunk driving with the cooperation of Sheriff Joe Maino and the Marquette County Sheriff’s Department. They were handcuffed, driven in a patrol car, searched, fingerprinted and confined to a jail cell like actual prisoners. DeFant and Weingarten hope to convey their experience to classmates and convince them that drinking and driving can lead to disaster.

MARQUETTE – The regular meeting of the Lincoln school Parent-Teacher association will be held in the Lincoln school at 8 o’clock tonight. An interesting program has been arranged and will be given as follows: Singing Sixth grade pupils; Violin solo Oscar Johnson; Miss Evelyn Garrow, accompanist; Solo Mrs. Clara Hackel; Piano solo Robert Light; Address, “The Child’s Welfare” Arthur D. Wood, judge of probate; Singing Teachers’ chorus. A paper on the care of the teeth, prepared especially for this meeting by Dr. Light, will be read by a teacher.

NEGAUNEE – Don Tresedder, MSI Insurance agent in Negaunee, just returned from Scottsdale, Ariz., where he attended a conference honoring all agents who sold more than a million dollars worth of life insurance. Tresedder, who has an office at 109 U.S. 41 West, Negaunee, has been in the insurance profession for 20 years and with MSI for 10 years.

MARQUETTE – Dan McQuaid, service advisor for Specker Motor Sales Co. in Marquette, received a certificate from J.J. Thompson, Chrysler field management training manager, upon completion of a five-day Chrysler Corp. training seminar in Detroit.

ISHPEMING – Members of the sophomore class of the Ishpeming high school expect to hold one of the best school parties ever given in the new gymnasium this evening when they will entertain the faculty with a program, dancing, and refreshments. MARQUETTE – A sure sign that spring is on the way is the gentle knock of a Girl Scout at the front door to take orders for cookies.

Brownie Scout Melissa Beals showed a brochure listing the seven varieties of Girl Scout cookies to customer Pat Duquette of Marquette.

Scouts from Peninsula Waters Girl Scout Council will be taking orders in the area until March 9, with cookies delivered April 4-15. Proceeds from the sale are a major source of funds for local troops and the council. Cookies cost $2 a box.

TROWBRIDGE – Thursday the moving men rolled the old Bancroft school on to a dolly and hauled it off to become the new parish hall for St. Christopher’s Church in Trowbridge Park. With it went many memories for a lot of people.

Built around 1891, the school was the replacement for the original township school that burned down. The old school stood near the junction of County Road 492 and U.S. 41, but after the fire it was decided to rebuild in what was then a more central location.

In its new life at St. Christopher’s the old school will probably be a cheering sight for the oldsters who remember when it was young and full of noise.

ISHPEMING – The Westwood High School drama department recently completed a successful forensics season with a second-place finish in Class C-D of the Michigan Interscholastic Forensic Association state finals in downstate Macomb.

Westwood was the only Upper Peninsula school that qualified for the competition. Members of the team who performed the mourning scene in John Millington Synge’s “Riders to the Sea” included Ginger Jestila, Katie Finney, Allison Marcotte, Chris Goldsworthy, Traci Ombrello, Dennis Niemisto, Heidi Bailey, Denise Epper, Joanna Wasie, Simone Turner, Jeffrey King, and Keith Barna.

GWINN – Seeking a goal of $2,750, members of the Gwinn Lions Club will stage a house-to-house canvass in Forsyth Township for the purpose of providing residents with an opportunity to make donations to help defray the purchase price of the new community ambulance.

The new 1952 model ambulance was purchased two weeks ago and made its first run Tuesday night when Ed Mussatto and Max Fralick, two of the members on the volunteer driver list, took a patient from Gwinn to St. Mary’s Hospital in Marquette.

MARQUETTE – Strong winds and weakening ice in Marquette’s Upper Harbor were apparently the cause of six ice shanties floating over to the Lower Harbor, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

Fireman Phil Denboer from the Coast Guard Station Marquette Station said the station received a call at about 2 a.m. Friday that the shanties had broken free of the ice sheet on the Upper Harbor and were floating eastward. Denboer said Coast Guard personnel checked the shanties Friday morning and found them empty. He added that one Coast guardsman partially fell through the ice, but was uninjured.

ISHPEMING – A necklace that should “wear like iron,” because it is iron, is the property of Mrs. William G. Mather, widow of the former head of Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co.

Naturally, CCI progress still interests Mrs. Mather, whose husband served the company for more than 50 years. When jasper was first processed at the Humboldt plant and pellets were made, Mrs. Mather received a sample of the product and visualized it as a necklace. Trying to provide a passage through the pellets for a chain to go through broke several diamond drills and proved quite difficult.

NEGAUNEE – Roger Pietro, representing Easter Seals, recently presented awards to Ki Kemp of Barr’s Bar in Negaunee and John Argall of Tino’s Bar in Negaunee as two of the winners in the annual Favorite Bartenders Contest sponsored by the society.

Argall and Linda Perttunen of the Venice Supper Club in Ishpeming were first place finishers in the contest, while Kemp, Paul Bonetti of the Congress Bar of Ishpeming, and Nancy Pleau of Rolly’s Place in Negaunee were runners-up.

MUNISING – Thrills, excitement and dog fights were featured during the annual dog derby conducted on Superior Street between the intersection of Spruce Street and Elm Avenue.

The event was witnessed by an exceptionally large crowd, both sides of the “speedway” being lined with spectators.

The race was run in three heats. First prize of $3 was awarded to Joseph Bonnerville, who featured first in the last two heats, with his dog “Ted.” John Seymore and John O’Brien tied for second place.

NEGAUNEE – Dogs, cats and other homeless pets in Marquette county will not lose a warm place to go in times of need. The Marquette county Humane Society Shelter’s building debt has been paid off.

According to society president, Hugh Kahler, the society received $7,500 from the estate of Edward Luoma of Ishpeming, with the stipulation that the funds be used to pay off the $5,647.06 mortgage to LaBonte Builders Inc. The remaining funds were earmarked for operating costs.

ISHPEMING – Walter Anderson and Matt Heikkinen, Ishpeming’s leading ski riders, who returned recently from Duluth where they competed in the national tournament, which was held a day late, having been postponed because of a 90-mph gale, tried out Ishpeming’s new slide for the first time today and pronounced it “a world better.”

In his first trip down the hill, during which he broke trail, Anderson just about cleared the “gap” and leaped 110 feet. On his first take-off from the bump, Heikkinen made 147 feet and stood.

MARQUETTE – Matt E. Lake of Chatham, a repairman in the Don Lucas Imports body shop scored the highest in the nation in recent auto body repair tests through the National Institute of Automobile Service Excellency, but also produced the only perfect score ever achieved in the examination. “We’re very proud of Matt for his accomplishment.” said Ben Rosten, Lake’s supervisor at Don Lucas Imports. Lake, a 28-year-old graduate of Eben High School, was flown by the National Institute of Automobile Service Excellency to its national convention in Dallas, where he attended seminars and expositions for two days. He received a trophy for his perfect score from Automotive Body Repair News, a trade journal, at an awards banquet.

MARQUETTE – Louis Riedinger, 138 Fisher St., was presented with a retirement pin by Oliver Beaudoin, president of Local 643, Marquette Fire Fighters Union. Riedinger retired in September after serving 27 years on the force. He began his career in 1928, and was fire truck driver at the No. 1 Station (Spring Street.) Paul Pachl, 409 West Crescent Street, also retired after 26 years’ service as a lieutenant at the No. 2 Station (North Front Street.)

NEGAUNEE – The Marquette area is experiencing the driest February since 1877, although National Weather Service officials say freezing rain and possible light snow is expected for later today.

According to Frank Kulbertis, National Weather Service meteorologist in Negaunee, the region has seen only .06 of an inch of precipitation since the beginning of the month. That compares with .12 of an inch received for the entire month back in 1877.

“This is one of the driest months we’ve ever had but it is supposed to end tonight,” Kulbertis said.

According to The Associated Press, warming temperatures turned snow into rain early today in the southern Lower Peninsula which formed an icy glaze on roads after a storm dumped up to 8 inches of snow. At least 134 school districts in those counties were closed for the day.

NEGAUNEE – Students from the Negaunee Cooperative Nursery have made friends with members of Janet Koehs’ family class at Negaunee High School with the two groups getting together once a week. The high schoolers recently presented their young counterparts with specialty-made hats reminiscent of favorite animals. Now, the youngsters can wear rabbit ears or a unicorn’s horn anytime they want at school, thanks to the generosity of their teenaged buddies.

MARQUETTE – Alfred Alholm, Marquette, who has been associated with bakeries since he was a boy of 13 in Finland, most recently as owner of the Marquette Baking company, retired from business on Jan. 31.

Ownership of the company has been assumed by Arthur Lemire, formerly with the Merchants wholesale Bakery, and a lifelong resident of Marquette.

ISHPEMING – At this week’s meeting of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, final plans were made for the ninth annual Sno-Ball to be held in the Georgian Room of the Mather Inn.

Music for the semi-formal dance will be provided by Paul Goodman’s orchestra. This dance is an annual part of the ski tournament festivities.

MARQUETTE – A donation of $700 has been used to purchase fire-retardant, non-skid carpeting for the physical therapy room of the Jacobetti Michigan Veterans Facility in Marquette. Some 96 of the facility’s 165 members take physical therapy daily. Francis “Fritz” Miljour, state Veterans of Foreign Wars chairman for the facility, got to take a look at the new carpet while turning over the funds to Sue Taylor, facility activities and therapy supervisor, along with Anton Wedal, facility commandant. The money came from contributions by the state VFW department, Upper Peninsula VFW posts and several downstate VFW posts.

NEGAUNEE – Between 600 and 700 cords of first quality ice have been stored in two large icehouses on the shores of Teal Lake, near the municipal pumping station by Robert Thompson, Negaunee dealer. Due to the prevalence of snow and wind storms the last two weeks, the time of the harvest was later than in previous years.

MARQUETTE – With the world of entertainment so enamored with gaudy spectacles of late, it was a distinct pleasure Wednesday night to view a solid piece of straightforward stagework. The Forest Robert Theatre production of William Inge’s Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy “Picnic” succeeds with good acting to a fine script under the direction of Shelley Russell, backed up by excellent set, lighting and costume design. The tale Inge tells in this bittersweet comedy is of the conflicts between beauty and brains, privilege and hardship, women and men, love and “good sense.” The all-star cast features Paul Truckey, Melanie Corp, Gayle Schweer, Bobby Glenn Brown and Courtney Krause.

ISHPEMING – With a well-balanced cast which would do credit to many road companies, the Elk’s musical comedy, “Apple Blossom Time,” which opened a two-night engagement last evening in the Ishpeming theater, was greeted by a capacity audience, and, in theatrical parlance, “went over big.” The LaGrange sisters, who directed the performance, are to be commended upon the novel stage settings and costuming. There were 80 Ishpeming persons in the company and with few exceptions they “worked” like professionals.

TRENARY – The Betty Crocker “Homemaker of Tomorrow” at Trenary High School is Rosalee Trowbridge. She received the highest score in a written examination that tested the homemaking knowledge and attitudes of senior girls.

She will be entered in a competition to name this state’s candidate for the title of all-American “Homemaker of Tomorrow” and will receive a golden award pin. The school will receive a “Betty Crocker Good and Easy Cook Book.”

ISHPEMING – Host Ishpeming High School split a pair of swimming contests Monday, the Hematite girls dropping Gwinn by a 44-32 count and the IHS boys falling to their Model Towner counterparts, 52-24. The Ishpeming girls of co-coaches Dorothy Anderson and Megs Ryan now sport a 6-2 season record while the boys are 4-4. Coach Brian Manderfield’s Model Towner girls are 4-9, but the boys raised their season mark to 16-3. Jon Schram and Tim Vandevorde won two individual events apiece for the Gwinn boys, while Tricia Ryan and Nikki Williams captured two victories each for the IHS girls.

ISHPEMING – Another milestone in the career of Louis Dubinsky of Ishpeming is reached in the grand opening of the new Kirkish Boot Shop.

Known to all as “Mr. D,” Dubinsky came to the United States from Europe as an immigrant and looked upon this country as a land of hope and opportunity, for those who would work for the fullfillment of such hope.

MARQUETTE – In an unprecendented undertaking in Marquette, the city’s three high schools – Graveraet, Bishop Baraga and John D. Pierce – will cooperate to observe “Senior Government Day” on Friday.

MARQUETTE – Super Saturday at Northern Michigan University this past weekend offered youngsters a chance to explore some subject areas not normally taught in their regular classrooms during the week. One of the students, Andy DePue, son of Clare and Alice DePue of Harvey, connected a wire to a battery as part of a robotics and electronics session for elementary students. Other courses ranged from art and dance to computers and fingerpainting.

ISHPEMING – Boy Scout Troop 326 held a Court of Honor recently in the American Legion clubrooms. Carl M. Johnson, institutional representative for the Legion, presented the troop charter to Norman Anderson, post commander, and awarded a citation of merit to Scoutmaster Jim Jenkins for his devoted duty to the troop for the past five years.

Boys receiving Tenderfoot pins were Howard Cohodas, Alfred Hendra, Robert Peterson, Robert Carlson, David Laitinen, Alan Mitchell, David Keskey, Lee LaFond, Bryan Moffatt, Keith King, and Robert Beer. Leslie Schmeltz, Howard Cohodas, John Lundin and Kenneth Brown received Second Class pins. Douglas Palomaki, Curtis Hosking and Duane Palomaki received First Class pins. Terry Hollett and Joseph Nicholas were awarded Star badges, and a Life badge was awarded to John Johnson.

MARQUETTE – Northern Michigan University’s women gymnasts make their final home appearance of the season Saturday afternoon as they seek their fifth dual meet win without a loss against Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Northern coach Lowell Meier said, “We’re undefeated and I think we’re going to win this week and next week at Superior (Wis.) too.”

Meier’s confidence is built around record-setting performances by junior Marie Phillips and a strong supporting cast of sophomores Karen Viola and Cathy Heitert. Freshmen Peggy Borch and Robin Mahre are keys as well. And all five are all-around competitors.

ISHPEMING – The Chicago and North Western railway freight depot was the scene of a fistic battle yesterday afternoon when an Ishpeming merchant and two draymen became involved over an account the former alleges the two owe him.

The amount is only for $1.98, but it is evident that it will be costly before settled in court. The merchant was arrested by Marshal Trevarrow at his home on complaint of the draymen to charges of assault and battery.

ISHPEMING – Carol Truscott and her sister, Susan Larson, are one up on Rumpelstiltskin. They turned a triangular piece of brass into a $1,000 U.S. savings bond.

The two Ishpeming women found the golden-colored medallion on Saturday after only one clue had been broadcast on radio stations WGLQ and WJPD on Friday. The medallion hunt was part of Marquette County’s first Winneboozho winter festival that started Friday and runs through Feb. 23.

Ron Wales, general manager of WJPD in Ishpeming, hatched the idea of where to hide the medallion along with Dan Olsen, general sales manager of WGLQ.

MARQUETTE – About 2,300 wild-eyed hockey fans watched the Marquette Indians hold the Minneapolis Millers to a two-all deadlock last night through three periods of the fastest hockey ever played on the Palestra ice.

Each sextet scored two goals in the first frame, but the second and third stanzas were scoreless. Joffre Quesnelle made the winning counter for the Millers on a pass from “Ching” Johnson in the extra session.

Freddie Faught, Indian goalie, is in large measure responsible for the small number of goals scored by the leaders of Central Hockey Association. He was cool as a cucumber under the deluge of pucks fired at him.

Koski, fastest man on the ice, caught the speedy Minneapolis forwards, secured the elusive rubber, and wheeled around to rush down for a shot at the goal.

MARQUETTE – Leonard Quilliam of Marquette has been smoking fish in his backyard for 10 years as a hobby. He turns lake trout, whitefish, and herring into tasty morsels for stocking his larder. Quilliam built his smoke house from brick with a galvanized tin door. It’s only three and a half feet square and six and half feet tall with venting near the roof. Racks and screens line the walls with room for a fire on the floor. He floats an egg in brine and soaks the fish until the egg sinks, then moves the fish to the smoking racks for up to nine hours. He trades fresh fish for smoked fish with the local fishermen who keep him supplied.

MARQUETTE – At the Jilbert Dairy Barn in Marquette, efficiency is the watchword as 100,000 pounds of raw milk is processed each day.

Pipes and tanks for the pasteurizing and homogenizing processes form a maze in the heart of the dairy. Paul Fassbender routinely checks the level of milk in a tank that feeds a filling machine.

The processed milk is packaged and loaded into half-pint cartons by Frank Praznik. Owner John Jilbert stacks milk in the cooler for orders to be sent to cities throughout the central U.P.

MARQUETTE – The Upper Peninsula seems to have been more active this winter than ever before in building up regard for snow as an area asset.

Newspapers have received notes like this one: “We observed a story in one of the papers about the amount of snowfall being in excess of last year, and instead of leaving the impression that the country was practically buried by snow, it stressed the assurance of a good ski season resulting from this snow.”

NEGAUNEE – Workmen at the site of the new Negaunee High School pool dismantled cement-pouring equipment recently. Louis Vredeveld, manager of the high school construction project, said that concrete has been poured for the pool floor and excavation of the elevator shafts in the school’s main building is in progress. Bill Howes, Negaunee School District superintendent, said that the school, which will be a renovated version of the buildings at the old Mather B Mine site, is scheduled to be opened in September.

MARQUETTE – Michigan’s new speed laws are now in effect. Beginning at 12:01 a.m. today, the legal speed limit on highways in this state is 65 miles an hour during the night, unless otherwise designated. Open highway speed laws are something Upper Peninsula motorists will have to accustom themselves to after their many years of driving in a state which had no speed limit for general highway travel.
