Candidates advised to take care

LONDON (AP) — British police are urging candidates in the Dec. 12 general election to use caution in a campaign that has already been marked by a high level of hostility.

The National Police Chiefsí Council said today it is urging candidates not to campaign alone if possible and to make advance contact with police in the area as a precaution.

The advice will be distributed in writing to all candidates as part of an information package developed by police, the Electoral Commission and prosecutors.

It also advises candidates to check material they have posted online to make sure that “sensitive personal information”î is not widely available.

A number of candidates have reported a rise in online threats and there has been slightly more heckling than usual in the early days of the campaign.
