MARQUETTE -- It's about to get retro.

From 10:30-11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 21, Danielle Levandoski will lead the Lake Superior Art Association's Art Make and Take for Kids and Families event in a lesson on creating retro neon signs.

The lesson is geared toward second graders to eighth graders.

"Parents and caretakers are encouraged to join in the fun too," reads the news release. "Classic neon signs are a part of everyday American culture. Neon can be incorporated into expensive, artistic sculptures. The process of crafting a neon sign is an art form -- skilled designers sculpt glass tubing, attach it to a form and fill it with heated gases. The types of gas used determine the color that the neon glows. The illusion of a neon sign can be replicated using a special art medium."

During the class, kids will be using soft pastels applied to black paper to create retro neon signs. The pastels will be blended to simulate the glowing effect of real neon signs. The use of tints, shades, and analogous colors will make the neon sign appear to illuminate.

The class will take place in Studio 1 at the Peter White Public Library in Marquette. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed. It is encouraged that artists wear an old T-shirt as chalk pastels can get messy.
