MICHIGAN -- Michigan State Police held a prescription drug take back event across the state on Saturday and collected a combined 510 lbs. of returned medications.
Drug take backs encourage residents to return unwanted, unused or expired medications.
"Safely disposing of unused and expired medications is a simple step that can have a lasting impact on our communities," said Col. James F. Grady II, director of the MSP. "Clearing out medications that are no longer needed and using a safe disposal site can help prevent prescription drug misuse, protect the environment and keep potentially dangerous medications out of the wrong hands."
All medications collected will be safely destroyed and disposed of.
MSP offices are open throughout the year to receive unwanted, unused or expired medications, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding holidays. Liquids, patches, inhalers and syringes will not be accepted.
According to the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy, "Proper drug disposal is important because it helps protect human health and our environment. Where possible, EGLE encourages medications requiring disposal be incinerated, to destroy the chemical formulations and prevent them from reaching water resources used for drinking water."
