MARQUETTE -- Police on Friday located the body of the man swept off Black Rocks Thursday afternoon. The deceased, a 62-year-old man from Calumet, was pulled from waters off Harvey a distance of some several miles.
In a Friday morning press release, the Marquette Police Department said that, "On 11/06/2026 at approximately 8:22am the Marquette Police Department and Chocolay Township Police Department responded to the report of a body in the water in the area of Lakewood Lane in Harvey.”
"Responding officers located the body just off the beach and were able to recover it from the water. The body was confirmed to be the male who had been washed off Black Rocks on 11/05/2026. The male is a 62-year-old from the Calumet, MI area.”
Assisting with the recovery of the body was the Chocolay Township Police Department, Marquette County Sheriff's Office, Chocolay Township Fire Department and UPHS-Marquette EMS.
Following the news of the incident on Thursday, the Marquette Fire Department issued a warning to residents and visitors about safety around Lake Superior.
"Do not underestimate this lake," reads the warning, which was posted on Facebook. "Today, someone was swept into Lake Superior at Black Rocks. Lake conditions completely prevented a search for the victim. It's a heartbreaking reminder of just how powerful and unpredictable this lake can be.
"Lake Superior is beautiful, but it demands respect. What can look like manageable waves from shore can quickly become life-threatening conditions. Powerful currents, crashing waves, cold water and sudden changes can turn into a tragic situation faster than you'd think.
"Stay away from the water during rough conditions, keep your distance from the shoreline and don't risk getting close for a picture or a better look.
"Enjoy its beauty, but respect its power and unpredictability. No picture, adventure or moment is worth more than your life."
