U.P. family starts rolled ice cream trailer

By JUSTIN MARIETTI 3 min read

Every year, Josh Nance and his family would travel to Clearwater, Florida, for spring break, and after they arrived, they couldn't track down the rolled ice cream truck fast enough.

"It quickly became a must-have treat during our trips," Nance said. "We loved how unique it was, not only in the way it was made but also in the experience of watching it come together. We thought, why not bring something this fun and different back home to the Upper Peninsula?"

And that’s when the idea for Yooper Rolls was born.

"This past summer, we decided it was finally time to turn our dream into a reality and begin our journey of bringing Yooper Rolls to life," said Nance. "After months of planning, preparation and hard work, we were excited to officially open for business in September."

He said one of the things the crew at Yooper Rolls is looking forward to most is introducing rolled ice cream to people who have never experienced it before, including those who are looking for dairy-free options.

"There’s something special about watching your ice cream being made right in front of you, and we can’t wait for more people to experience the fun of it," he said. "What started as a must-have treat during our family trips to Florida has now become something we get to share right here at home in the U.P. And the best part? You no longer have to travel all the way to Florida to satisfy that rolled ice cream craving -- Yooper Rolls has you covered."

On Friday, Yooper Rolls will be at Wild West Spooktacular in Manistique from 3-7 p.m., followed by Escanaboo at the U.P. State Fairgrounds on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

They will also be at Gordon Food Service in Escanaba from 3-7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 30.

"Moving forward, our goal is to continue popping up at local events, exploring new locations, and bringing a little something sweet and unique to communities throughout the U.P.," Nance said.

During the winter months, Yooper Rolls will shift gears, focusing mainly on private events.

"Whether it’s a wedding, birthday party, or another special celebration, we’d love to bring a unique and delicious treat to your gathering," he said.

Nance said the crew at Yooper Rolls is excited to begin booking events for 2027, including graduation parties, weddings, birthdays and really any occasion where rolled ice cream would be a fun addition.

"Our goal is to make Yooper Rolls more than just a sweet treat -- we want to bring a fun, memorable experience to your special events all year long," he said.
