MENOMINEE -- An elderly overdue hunter was successfully located and reunited with his family on Wednesday night, Menominee County Sheriff Darrin Kudwa reported.
"Menominee County sheriff's deputies were advised of the missing 80-year-old male at approximately 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 21, when family members became concerned that he had not retired during daylight hours," the officer said via a written statement. "The sheriff's office K9 Unit and Drone Unit responded to the scene and the missing hunter was quickly located. The male was found in good health after spending approximately 10 hours in the woods."
The Menominee County Sheriff’s Office reminded residents and visitors to have a safety plan in place before taking to the woods:
• Know the address or coordinates of the area you'll be in.
• Share your parking locations, route of travel and expected return times with a friend or family member -- and check in with them daily.
• Carry a cellphone or radio on your person, in an accessible interior pocket to prevent the cold from draining the battery.
• Call or text 911 if you become lost or need emergency assistance.
If using a mapping application, download the offline maps to ensure access without cellular reception.
Carry emergency essentials, including a first aid and bleeding control kit, light or headlamp, food, water, a fire starter and an extra layer or emergency blanket.
