NEGAUNEE -- The city of Negaunee's treasurer, Brian Downing, has been placed on unpaid suspension and banned from city hall, according to City Manager Nate Heffron.
The suspension, which officially began Oct. 2 for five days and renewed Monday for five additional days, is because of job performance issues, said Heffron, who initiated the move. He declined to note specifically what the job performance issues were.
"It's not something that just popped up," Heffron said, adding that there were several matters at issue.
The Mining Journal was unable to reach Downing, who is also a member of the Negaunee Fire Department, for comment. Downing has been the treasurer for the city of Negaunee since July 2015.
On Monday, however, a posting on Downing's Facebook page said the following: "The cowardice of Nate at the City of Negaunee has banned me from city hall and the fire department. I was ready to help battle these wildfires if needed but someone's sensitive little ego thinks he takes priority."
The Negaunee City Council will meet in special session Wednesday, Oct. 21, to discuss the matter. Heffron said the matter may be discussed behind closed doors if Downing so chooses.
