MARQUETTE -- The Marquette Fire Department battled a blaze early Tuesday morning at a residence at 1308 N. Front St. There were no human fatalities but one dog was killed by the fire while a second dog and 3 cats were rescued.
“Fire crews arrived on scene within four minutes of dispatch and encountered visible smoke and fire conditions on the first floor of a two-story residential structure," said a MFD press release. “Mutual aid agencies were confirmed enroute, a third alarm was requested and utility companies were notified to secure utilities to the property.”
Unit 2057 arrived first and conducted an initial scene size-up. All occupants were confirmed to be out of the residence; however, crews were advised of missing pets believed to be inside the structure. Unit 2057 established "Front Street Command" and began coordinating fireground operations.
Engine 2054 arrived and was assigned primary search operations with a crew of two firefighters. Engine 2052 arrived shortly thereafter and was assigned fire attack. A two-firefighter crew deployed a 1¾-inch handline to initiate interior fire suppression operations. Engine 2052 also established a water supply from a nearby hydrant.
“Fire suppression efforts were effective, with the fire brought under control within approximately 10 minutes of the arrival of fire crews,” the release states. “A primary search of the entire structure was completed within 15 minutes, confirming that no occupants remained inside. Following initial fire suppression and primary search operations, crews transitioned to secondary searches, overhaul and salvage operations.”
The fire was officially declared under control at approximately 0405 hours. Fire units remained on scene to monitor conditions and conduct additional operations until fire investigation personnel arrived at approximately 0545 hours. The origin and cause of the fire remain under investigation.
The Marquette Fire Department was assisted by the Marquette City Police Department, Marquette Township Fire Department, Chocolay Township Fire Department, UPHS EMS Unit 141 and the Marquette Board of Light and Power.
