MARQUETTE -- During Tuesday night's meeting of the Marquette County Board of Commissioners, the commission voted 3-2 to appoint Margaret Brumm to the District 1 seat vacated by former commissioner Karl Numinen, in which the unexpired term lasts until Dec. 31.
Brumm is currently running as a write-in candidate for the seat against Cody Mayer, who defeated Numinen in the August primary with over 70% of the vote. Mayer had also applied to fill the vacancy.
"I applied for this appointment last year when Johnny DePetro resigned due to health reasons," said Mayer in a social media post. "The board voted to appoint their own attorney Karl Numinen to fill this seat. I ran against Karl and received 71.3% of the vote in the August 2026 primary. Margaret announced her write-in campaign shortly after.
"Karl resigns 3 weeks before the General Election. The Chair put the appointment on tonight’s agenda. They then in a 3 – 2 vote appointed my write-in opponent… This is an insult to the democratic process."
The Mining Journal reached out to Brumm for comment, but she was unavailable.
