Local defense counsel named to probate bench

MARQUETTE -- A member of the Marquette County defense bar has been appointed to the 6th District Probate Court bench, covering Mackinac and Luce counties.

Dr. Amber Libby will take over the position following the resignation of Judge W. Clayton Graham. Her partial term will begin Oct. 12 and expire at noon on Jan. 1, 2029. The appointment was made by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

"I am truly grateful to receive the distinct honor of a judicial appointment from Gov. Whitmer and to be able to continue to serve Upper Peninsula communities," said Libby. "I am sincerely reverent to the duties, responsibilities, integrity and respect for the law being entrusted in me through this appointment to the 6th District Probate Court bench. I am a proud Yooper, and I treasure this opportunity."

Noted Whitmer: "Amber is a skilled legal professional who brings years of experience and dedication to her community. I am confident that she will serve the people of Michigan admirably and uphold the rule of law."

Libby is originally from St. Ignace and previously served as a senior assistant public defender at the Marquette County Office of the Public Defender.

The Marquette County Office of the Public Defender made a statement regarding Libby's new position, saying that "Our very own Dr. Amber Libby was appointed to the Probate bench in Mackinac and Luce County today and we celebrate her excellent service to our past clients while lamenting her loss to those we will represent in the future."

Libby has also previously served as managed assigned counsel for indigent defense at the Cheboygan County Office of Assigned Counsel and chief assistant prosecuting attorney at Cheboygan County Prosecuting Attorney's Office. Libby is also a member of the Women Lawyers Association of Michigan – Tip of the Mitt Region.

She holds a Bachelor of Science in political science from Northern Michigan University, a Master of Public Administration from Central Michigan University, a Juris Doctor and Master of Laws from Western Michigan University’s Thomas M. Cooley Law School and both a Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy in criminal justice and justice administration from Walden University.
