HARVEY -- Local residents will have an opportunity to responsibly dispose of unwanted electronic equipment during an e-waste collection scheduled from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at the Ojibwa Casino, 105 Acre Trail, in Harvey.

The event is supported by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy; Keweenaw Bay Indian Community; Great Lakes Climate Corps; and Superior Watershed Partnership and Land Conservancy.

Kathleen Henry, SWP special projects coordinator, underscored that electronic waste should be mixed in with regular household refuse as it often contains harmful substances that should not be placed in a regular landfill.

"A lot of toxic materials," she told The Mining Journal. "We work through a certified recycler."

That recycler, Dynamic Lifecycle Innovations of Onalaska, Wisconsin, is an electronics and materials lifecycle management corporation specializing in IT asset disposition, electronics recycling, legislative compliance, product refurbishment, re-marketing and resale, materials recovery and data security, according to the company's website.

Henry said Saturday's collection will accept a variety of electronic items, including computers, phones, tablets, televisions, monitors, DVD and VCR players, desktop fax machines, gaming consoles, keyboards, cords, routers, desktop printers and scanners.

Kitchen appliances, including coffee pots, microwaves, vacuums and lamps, will not be accepted. Neither will rear-projection televisions.

A fee of $5 per vehicle will be charged. Businesses may be invoiced for materials, with prices varying depending on the items collected.
