NEWBERRY -- Three passengers were seriously injured early Saturday when a vehicle slammed into an embankment at the M-28/M-117 intersection, prompting Michigan State Police troopers to provide emergency first aid before the driver was arrested on an operating while intoxicated charge.
The crash occurred at approximately 3 a.m. Sept. 26. Troopers from the state police’s Sault Ste. Marie post said the vehicle was traveling north on M-117 when the 27-year-old Cedarville driver disregarded traffic control devices at the M-28 intersection and continued straight.
Troopers said the vehicle crossed both the eastbound and westbound lanes of M-28 before leaving the roadway on the north side and crashing into an embankment. When officers arrived, they found all three passengers seriously injured. Troopers immediately began providing first aid and in one particularly serious case, a trooper applied a tourniquet to a passenger suffering severe bleeding.
All three injured passengers were transported by EMS to Helen Newberry Joy Hospital for treatment. The driver, who suffered minor injuries, was evaluated at the scene but refused medical treatment.
During the investigation, troopers said the driver displayed signs of being under the influence. He was subsequently arrested for operating while intoxicated causing incapacitating injury and lodged in the Luce County Jail in Newberry.
MSP identified the driver as a 27-year-old Cedarville man but is withholding his name pending arraignment.
Luce County EMS, Newberry Fire Department and Chippewa County Central Dispatch assisted MSP at the scene. The investigation continues.
