Suspect arrested after alleged assault, explosives possession in Marquette

MARQUETTE -- at approximately 11:45 a.m. on Friday, the Marquette Police Department responded to a 911 open line where an altercation could be heard by the dispatcher. Upon arrival contact was made with the parties involved. During the investigation it was learned that an assault had occurred and the suspect had also been in possession of a device that was reported to a pipe bomb.

The device was located outside the residence and the area was cordoned off. Contact was made with the Michigan State Police Bomb Squad who traveled from Grayling to assess the device. At the time the news release was issued, a portion of the 500 block of Rock Street in Marquette was closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic. There was no recommendation to have residences in the area evacuated.

The suspect was arrested and lodged at the Marquette County Jail on the following charges:

• Assault - a 93-day misdemeanor

• Explosive - sending with intent to frighten - a 5-year felony

The suspect's name will not be released until arraignment.
