Superior Hills Elementary opens new playground

MARQUETTE -- Superior Hills Elementary School in Marquette celebrated the opening of its new playground with a ceremonial ribbon cutting ceremony on Monday.
The playground opened after a Superior Hills Association for Parents and Educators received a $100,000 reimbursement grant from the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development for the cost of demolishing and installing the new playground. SHAPE was able to raise money to cover the cost of playground equipment thanks to grants received from a variety of local organizations, businesses and foundations, as well as Superior Hills families and community members.
"When designing the playground, Emily (Roberge) and I focused on having a play structure that would be accessible to all of our students," said Kim Donnelt, president of SHAPE.
"We have over 400 students at Superior Hills Elementary ranging from 4 to 12 years old, which also includes a Functional Skills Program. Our students use this playground every day at school so it is important that all children can access the play structure.
"We also wanted to design a play structure that provides physical challenges for all children at all different age and ability levels. Designing a structure that appeals to kindergarteners and Fifth graders can be a challenge, but we wanted to make sure there were elements for everyone to enjoy and grow with."
The new playground at Superior Hills will be enjoyed both by Superior Hills students and local community members.
"This was a great project to be a part of, and we are truly grateful for all of the grant awards, monetary donations and volunteer hours that made this possible," said Donnelt. "We are excited to see children thrive while using the new play structure in the years to come."
