Pickup truck collides with train; two injured

HUDSON TOWNSHIP -- Two people were injured Saturday morning when a pickup truck collided with a train at a railroad crossing in Mackinac County, according to the Michigan State Police.

Lt. Ben Eckola, Eighth District public information officer, said troopers from the MSP post in St. Ignace were called to the crash site at approximately 9:35 a.m. Saturday on Borgstrom Road near Black River Road in Hudson Township.

The preliminary state police investigation determined the pickup truck disregarded the traffic control device at the railroad crossing and failed to yield to the approaching train, resulting in the collision, Eckola said.

The driver, a 34-year-old Newberry man, and a juvenile passenger suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Both were transported by emergency medical personnel to Helen Newberry Joy Hospital for treatment.

The train crew was not injured. Names have not been released.

Eckola said alcohol and drugs are not believed to have been factors in the crash. The investigation remains ongoing.

Assisting the state police at the scene was the Mackinac County Sheriff’s Office, Hendricks Township Fire Department, Hudson Township Fire Department, Garfield Township Fire and EMS, Luce County EMS and Chippewa County Central Dispatch.
