MARQUETTE -- The death of the adult male found off the Iron Ore Heritage Trail near Wilson Street in the city of Marquette in early August was not a homicide but was related to drugs he took, a now completed investigation by the Marquette Police Department has found.
The man, identified as Trevor Williams, 43, originally from the city of Escanaba, was found off the trail by a passerby on Aug. 8, according to Det. Lt. Mike Archocosky of the MPD.
"It was not a homicide," Archocosky said. "He overdosed on his own medication."
Archocosky declined to specifically name the drug involved or whether it had been prescribed to Williams.
Williams was associated with the Warming Center in Marquette. He had apparently been camping in the area when the passerby found his body down an embankment in a muddy area adjacent to the trail, on the trail's south side.
Resuscitation efforts were attempted by first responders, but Williams was eventually pronounced dead.
Toxicology testing taken as a routine matter of course revealed the presence of drugs in the body.
Archocosky said MPD, as part of its investigation, looked into reports that Williams was in conflict with a person or persons at the Warming Center but did not find anything of substance.
"Nobody wanted to kill him," he added.
Assisting MPD at the scene was the Marquette City Fire Department and UPHS-Marquette EMS.
