MARQUETTE -- From 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday, the Marquette stop of the Election Education for Everyday People Roadshow, featuring former East Lansing City Clerk Marie E. McKenna-Wicks, will be taking place at LoveMARQ Church in Marquette.
The show will be traveling across the 1st district over the next few weeks, making stops in places such as Houghton, Newberry and Gaylord.
During the non-partisan, informational presentation, Wicks will describe how voter registration and the counting of ballots happens in Michigan, and how local voting precincts work to ensure that voting is secure and accurate.
"Local township, village and city clerks administer Michigan's elections, not the federal government or politicians in Lansing," said a statement from UP North Advocacy Education Fund, the event organizer. "Our local clerks are our neighbors, and they are trained experts in running elections and ensuring their communities can exercise their fundamental freedom to vote."
UP North Advocacy Education Fund is hosting the event, with support from groups in each community. The public is invited to attend, and snacks will be provided.
“Elections are safe, secure, and thanks to recent reforms -- more accessible than ever," said Wicks. "As a seasoned election administrator myself, I look forward to providing information about how our elections are conducted in transparent ways.
"As we move into this important election cycle, Michigan voters should feel confident that their ballots will count whether voting in person or absentee. I am very much looking forward to providing reassurance and answering questions that voters have.”
"There are a lot of concerns floating around about our elections," said Lexi Tater, the Western Upper Peninsula Organizer at Up North Advocacy Education Fund. "It will be good for myself and my community to have these issues addressed."
