SAULT STE. MARIE -- A man was arrested after breaking into a room at the Paradise Lakefront Lodge, stealing about $3,040 in cash and then later resisting arrest.
At about 11 a.m. Sept. 3, a trooper from the Michigan State Police post in Sault Ste. Marie responded to a reported theft at the Paradise Lakefront Lodge, which occurred the previous evening, Lt. Ben Eckola, Eighth District public information officer, said in a written statement. The investigation found that a male suspect had unlawfully entered a hotel room and stole approximately $3,040 in cash.
Following a preliminary investigation and review of surveillance footage, a suspect was identified as a California man working seasonally in the Paradise area.
The trooper located the suspect and informed him he was under arrest. The suspect resisted arrest and fled on foot. After the trooper gave commands for the suspect to stop, the trooper deployed a department-issued TASER, temporarily incapacitating the suspect and allowing the trooper to take him into custody.
Eckola said the suspect was evaluated for minor injuries sustained after he resisted arrest and fell to the ground, following the TASER deployment. The suspect was medically cleared and lodged in the Chippewa County Jail.
On Sept. 4, Antonio Murphy, 35, was arraigned in the 91st District Court in Sault Ste. Marie on one count of Home Invasion 1st Degree, Larceny in a Building and Assault/Resist a Police Officer. His bond was set at $10,000 cash with tether and other standard conditions. He is next due in court on Sept. 17, Eckola said.
The stolen money was recovered and will be returned to the victims.
