Forsyth Township Fire Department prepping new pumper to be put into service

GWINN -- The Forsyth Township Fire Department has received a new fire truck that it had ordered from a manufacturer in Wisconsin.
More than two years of planning and building went into the pumper specially made for the Gwinn-based department. The cost was $850,000, financed entirely through the township.
It replaces the Gwinn-based department's old truck that had been in service for close to 30 years, according to the Forsyth department 1st Assistant Chief Larry Hammond.
While the truck arrived at the department in late July, it won't be put into service until early October, Hammond said, adding that it needed to be outfitted with a few additional components before it would be ready for a fire run.
This new truck, in addition to having more water storage and better lights than the current one, has numerous automatic components in contrast to the old truck that was completely manual in all its operations.
The truck was built by Pierce Manufacturing of Appleton, Wisconsin. On that company's website, its listed height is 10 feet, 2 inches, with a 510-horsepower PACCAR MX-13 engine and all hard-wired electrical components.
Its pumping capacity is listed at 1,500 gallons per minute with a 1,000-gallon tank capable of holding foam and/or water.
Hammond said the old pumper will be retained by the Forsyth department for the time being.
He also said he expects the new pumper to be available for the static display of fire vehicles annually held in the city of Marquette during Fire Prevention Week, which this year runs from Oct. 4-10.
