MARQUETTE -- Marquette County voters Tuesday made their voices heard at the ballot box and turnout was overwhelming. According to unofficial results, 19,542 people across the county came out and voted, making the voter turnout 35%. In comparison, voter turnout in Marquette County was 29.12% in the August 2024 primary election and 26.95% in the August 2022 primary election.
Turnout was highest in Ewing Township, where 47.45% of registered voters voted and lowest in Forsyth Township Precinct 3, where 17.82% of registered voters voted.
Patrick Crowley and Derek Swajanen beat out Bill Nordeen in the 96th District Court Judge race, and will continue on to face each other on the November ballot. Crowley received approximately 35% of the vote, and Swajanen received approximately 34%.
"We did it - thank you all for your support," said Crowley. "I'm honored to have received the trust of our community to move on to the General Election.
"Working to have our legal system better meet the needs of all citizens, finding ways to optimize court efficiency, and pursuing holistic support and mental health resources are not just buzz words or campaign tactics, they're what I've been doing my entire career.
"Based on the thousands of conversations I've had and the thousands of people who cast their vote it's clear that work resonates and is valued."
"As the primary comes to a close, I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who got out and voted," said Swajanen. "The race was incredibly close and every vote truly mattered.
"Thank you for your support as we move on to the General Election on Nov. 3rd! I’m excited to continue this campaign with your encouragement."
Cody Mayer beat Karl Numinen in the Democratic primary election for the Marquette County Commission District 1 seat with approximately 71% of the vote. Because there are no Republican candidates running, Mayer will run unopposed in November.
"Thank you to the residents of Marquette," said Mayer. "I’m truly honored and beyond grateful! Thank you to everyone that supported this campaign."
Jenna Smith received approximately 60% of the vote in the Marquette County Commission District 3 democratic primary, ahead of Randy Ritari and Fred Benzie. Because there are no Republican candidates running, Smith will run unopposed in November.
"Thank you Marquette County, for showing up in a big way for (Cody Mayer) and I yesterday," said Smith.
All of the county's millages passed -- Forsyth Township's general operations millage renewal, Forsyth Township's library services millage renewal, Forsyth Township's police services millage renewal, Humboldt Township's emergency services millage, Humboldt Township's fire protections millage, Humboldt Township's general operations millage renewal, Humboldt Township sanitation millage, Marquette Township's emergency medical services millage, Marquette County's Transit Authority millage and Marquette County's Veterans Affairs millage.
Tuesday's ballot also had several U.P.-wide and state-wide elections.
In the State Senate 38th District race, Marquette County voted approximately 53% in favor of candidate Beau LaFave, who lost the election district-wide to Dave Prestin, who received approximately 53% of the total vote. Prestin will go on to face Democratic nominee Kelli van Ginhoven, who ran unopposed in her primary and Independent candidate Sara Cambensy in the November election.
In the State Legislature 109th District race, candidates from both parties ran unopposed. Incumbent Karl Bohnak will face Anna Aho Rink in the November election.
In the race for U.S. Senate, Marquette County voted approximately 58% in favor of Abdul El-Sayed, who won the election with approximately 49% of the statewide vote and received the nomination for the race against Mike Rogers in November. Rogers ran unopposed in his primary.
In the race for Congressional District 1, Marquette County voted approximately 77% in favor of incumbent Jack Bergman in the Republican primary, and approximately 62% in favor of Callie Barr in the Democratic primary. District-wide, Bergman received approximately 74% of votes in his primary and Barr approximately 58.5% of votes in hers. The two will face each other in the November election.
In the race for governor, Marquette County voted approximately 87% in favor of Jocelyn Benson in the Democratic primary. Benson received approximately 83% of the statewide vote. In the Republican gubernatorial primary, Marquette County voted approximately 45% in favor of John James. James received approximately 50% of the statewide vote and will therefore face Benson in November.
The general election will be held Nov. 3.
