NMU celebrates back to school with annual Fall Fest

MARQUETTE -- Northern Michigan University was back to school on Monday, after a busy move-in weekend. Campus will once again be home to over 7,000 students and on Monday many of those students gathered around the Northern Center to participate in NMU's annual Fall Fest, a gathering of local businesses and organizations and student clubs.
"We are a student (organization) that is made by students for students, and we essentially create spaces for students to create work and sell their work," said Hyde Whitney, a student who was manning the Student Art League's booth at Fall Fest. "All majors are open to create art here ... we want to make sure that students have access to express themselves creatively."
"The Holistic Wellness / Preventative Wellness Club was started 2 years ago," said Katie Klaas, who was sitting behind the organization's booth. "We bring in guest speakers, and it's open to any major. But instead of a pre-med focus, it's open to nursing, chiropractic, P.A., dental, anything like that. We do some community service, some volunteering."
Jessica Schrader, who was working the Superior Acapella booth, said that "we are the only collegiate acapella group in the entire U.P. So we don't compete. We are honestly just for fun, a community group that is made up of only students ... It’s a really fun environment. We really pride ourselves on the fact that we are not just music and theatre majors. We have people in the STEM departments come over, (and) art majors."
Student organizations were busy chatting with new students and getting them signed up to clubs on campus.
Area businesses and organizations in attendance included local banks, restaurants, gyms, churches and more. Many of these booths were looking to advertise their products and services to students, or to seek student employees.
