Fire injures man, kills pet in Escanaba

ESCANABA -- In the early morning hours on Wednesday, firefighters with the Escanaba Department of Public Safety were called to a blaze in which one person was injured and one animal died.
At 4:28 a.m., Delta County Central Dispatch advised Public Safety that they had received a call about a camper and vehicle on fire at 3125 14th Ave. S., which is off of Willow Creek Road, across from land belonging to the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians.
Public Safety responded with Fire Engine 34 and found upon arrival that both the camper and a pickup truck were fully engulfed in flames. The Ford River Volunteer Fire Department responded as well.
"Units were able to extinguish the fire rather quickly… The fire was successfully contained and extinguished, preventing further spread or damage to nearby dwellings," read a press release from the Escanaba Department of Public Safety.
A male who had been staying in the camper trailer sustained minor injuries, but was soon released by Rampart Emergency Medical Services.
One pet died in the fire.
A nearby outbuilding appeared to have at least some external fire damage on Wednesday.
