NEWBERRY - A 21-year-old Newberry man appeared in court Wednesday to face murder and assault charges in connection with the fatal stabbing of one man and the alleged assault of another on Sunday evening.
Damon Lamar Palmer II was arraigned in the Luce County 92nd District Court on one felony count of homicide -- open murder statutory short form and one felony count of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, according to Michigan court records.
The charges stem from an incident that occurred at approximately 7:15 p.m. Sunday, when deputies from the Luce County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call in the 300 block of East John Street in Newberry regarding a reported stabbing, according to a news release.
Upon arrival, deputies made contact with a 47-year-old man, also from Newberry, who had allegedly been physically assaulted by Palmer.
Deputies also found a 40-year-old Newberry man in the yard suffering from multiple stab wounds allegedly inflicted by Palmer. Despite emergency efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Luce County Sheriff's Office.
The deceased man was identified by family members as Jay Edward Endsley.
"He was the best brother, uncle, son, dad, nephew, cousin to all," Jay's sister, Jill Ann Endsley, told the Daily Press. "He would help anyone, would give you the shirt off his own back. He surely didn't deserve this."
The 47-year-old man, who police later identified as Terry Endsley, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Palmer remained at the scene and was taken into custody without further incident.

According to Michigan court records, Palmer also appeared in court Wednesday for a preliminary examination in a separate case in which he is charged with one felony count of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder.
The alleged offense in that case occurred June 30, and Palmer was arraigned July 3.
