MARQUETTE -- The Hiawatha Traditional Music Festival, which is celebrating its 46th annual event this weekend, has announced that it expects the festival to continue despite poor air quality.

In a statement released Thursday morning, the Hiawatha Music Co-op said that "Festival participants are encouraged to use their best judgement to determine if the conditions are comfortable for them as changes can occur. Bring a mask with you should you feel the need to use one. Those with asthma or other respiratory risks are encouraged to take extra caution."

The HMC has continued to update festival attendees on their Facebook page. Early Friday morning, they announced that morning lineup activities would commence as expected, but that the Member-Meet-Up scheduled for Friday evening had been canceled. They also indicated that those looking to change camping accommodations could access special discounted rates at area hotels, including Best Western Plus, Staybridge Suites, Ramada Inn, Superior Stay and Landmark Inn.

"Discussions continue regarding festival activities," said the HMC in another Facebook update. "At this time, the festival teams are continuing to prepare for our scheduled activities while outlining plans for responding to changes due to wildfires.

"We continue to talk with team leaders and review feedback from public health professionals and other advisors and will continue to monitor activities. We have also spoken with musicians who have indicated they are committed to performing."

Updates will continue to be posted to the Hiawatha Music Co-op's Facebook page.
