MARQUETTE -- A severe thunderstorm passed through the area and region Thursday afternoon, bringing heavy rain to Marquette and much of the central Upper Peninsula.
The result was snarled traffic, city streets turned into small rivers and gutters inundated with several inches of rainfall.
The National Weather Service office in Negaunee Township issued a special marine warning for the following areas: Eagle River to Manitou Island, Lake Superior from the upper entrance to the Portage Canal to Manitou Island and the upper entrance of Portage Canal to Eagle River.
Additionally, the agency issued a local flood advisory for southeastern Baraga County Thursday afternoon with minor flooding expected in low-lying and poor-drainage areas. Both police and the weather service officials advise that motorists should not attempt to drive on flooded roads as most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Some areas that may experience flooding include Three Lakes and Craig Lake State Park.
This is only the latest of several big storms that have come through the area. The last month has seen four confirmed tornadoes between Marquette and Alger counties.
