Body recovered in Straits of Mackinac
ST. IGNACE — The body of the individual who was the focus of search and recovery efforts in the Straits of Mackinac recently has been recovered, according to the Michigan State Police.
MSP Eighth District public information officer, Lt. Benjamin Eckola, said the body was recovered at about 6 p.m. Friday.
Eckola said at about 12:35 a.m. on Thursday, troopers from the state police post in St. Ignace responded to a report of an abandoned vehicle on the Mackinac Bridge. Upon arrival, troopers located an unoccupied vehicle. A subsequent review of available video footage showed the vehicle coming to a stop, after which an individual exited the vehicle and jumped from the bridge.
Based on evidence recovered from the vehicle, the individual was identified and MSP notified the next of kin.
In addition to the state police, the US Coast Guard, the MSP Marine Services Team and the MSP Aviation Unit played key roles in the search and recovery.
