One dead following domestic dispute
SAULT STE. MARIE — An apparent domestic dispute in Sault Ste. Marie Thursday turned deadly with one person dead and a second injured from flying glass debris, police said.
According to officers with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Department, officers were dispatched to a residence on Young Street at 1:40 p.m. Thursday after receiving report of multiple gun shots fired. Additionally, when officers were enroute to the scene, they were advised that a man had shot himself.
Upon arriving, police determined that a domestic dispute had precipitated the shots and that a nearby residence had been shot several times. An occupant of the residence had sustained minor injuries from flying glass. There were no other suspects or injuries reported.
The immediate investigation found that the apparent shooter had returned to his residence where he turned the gun on himself. He was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital but later died of his injuries.
No additional information was available.
Assisting the Sault police were the Chippewa Country Central Dispatch, the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department, the Sault Tribe Police Department, U.S. Border Patrol, the Michigan State Police, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and the Chippewa County Victim’s Services Unit.
