MARQUETTE — On Thursday, the Marquette City Band opened its 2026 Summer Concert Series at Reynolds Recital Hall after the scheduled performance at the Marquette Commons had to be moved due to weather.

Before the concert began, Tiina Marin, Manager of the City’s Arts and Culture Office, presented conductor Dr. Stephen Grugin and Marquette City Band president Mike Stucko with a special recognition award from the Association of Concert Bands to commemorate the Marquette City Band’s 140th anniversary, which they are celebrating this year.

The band played a collection of music fitting the theme of “An Old-Fashioned Band Concert,” with pieces composed by Charles Chaplin, Leroy Anderson, John Philip Sousa and others. The show featured a trumpet solo by Jacob Schmeltzer, and Negaunee City Band Director Lucas Wickstrom guest conducted one of the pieces.
