Marquette Powwow Committee to host first Ziigwan Powwow, seeks sponsors

MARQUETTE — On April 25, the Marquette Powwow Committee will be hosting their inaugural traditional Ziigwan Powwow at the Harvey Ojibwa Casino Convention Center. Doors open at 11, and events continue throughout the day. The word ziigwan means spring in Anishinaabemowin.

“This particular powwow, the Ziigwaan (spring), is where we proudly dance for the earth in the new beginnings that sprout with the season that normally happens every spring, like a ‘tradition,'” Said top lead committee member Sarah Garver.

“What you don’t want to miss, and should be there for, are the Grand Entries,” said Garver. “We will have two. The first one starts the powwow at 1 p.m. leading into the day, having an intermission at 5 p.m. with a feast for free, and then restarting with a second Grand Entry at 6 p.m., but it will be a shorter spread of drumming and dancers. Closing with the retiring the flags, and ending with a giveaway.”

In addition to the Grand Entries and special dance contests/performances, there will be plenty of vendors.

“You will see a wide variety of Native American craft vendors just in time to find something beautiful for mothers day, or to wear, or to take home,” said Garver. “Hungry, don’t you worry about that, we have food vendors that have the best fry bread entrees and fish. There will be a table that has colorful Ziigwaan T-shirts for sale.”

The powwow is open to anyone, and a few of the events are open to all attendees.

“One of my favorite specials during the powwow will be the hot potato dance,” said Garver. “Anyone can join in on this, people don’t have to be in regalia or be native to do this special. You just grab a partner of your choice and while the drummers are drumming, the couple put the potato between their forehead and move around the arena without letting it fall. The last couple out there wins a prize.”

An event this large requires community support, and the Marquette Powwow Committee is still looking for sponsors.

“We are still seeking sponsors that will help with the lead dancers, drums, flag staff, spot dances, etc. which make our powwow possible,” said Garver. “We would love for this to be a great turnout and become an annual powwow at the same time every year for many years with possible expansion. If there is anyone willing to help contribute in a monetary or gift form, they may reach out to me by calling (906) 395-1349, or by email at garver20@gmail.com, or (can contact) Mike Shelafoe at 906-869-3082 or email at mshelafoe@charter.net, and go from there.”

No drugs or alcohol are permitted at this event.

“We really want the public to know that this is for everyone,” said Garver. “If you have curiosity, unanswered questions, (or have) never been to one, here’s the opportunity. It’s free of charge, open to all, and you don’t have to be in regalia. Even if you want to join in the circle, listen to the MC, he is there to tell you throughout the day what’s happening. If you hear him say ‘intertribal,’ that means everyone can come dance. You do not have to be native to participate, to attend, to dance. Come as you are, bring a friend or two, bring your family, and join us as we proudly spend the day in culture and tradition. It’s the positive energy, the beauty of the regalia, the sound of the drums and singers, the honor within.

“Like our Facebook page to see updates and invite others. Travel Marquette is our top sponsor and they have created an events page for this powwow that you can go and share and invite those that you think would enjoy this as well. We would be honored with your love and support … Check out the vendors, get your seats, and enjoy what we have in store.”
