Confirmed details in child’s death released

IRONWOOD — The Gogebic County Sheriff’s Office has provided an update regarding the ongoing investigation into the death of Darwin Olson, 2, of Ironwood Township.
The preliminary investigation has been determined to be a traffic incident that took place in the early morning hours of March 19 at the intersection of Lake Road and Sunset Road in Ironwood Township. The area was closed off immediately. There was a temporary closure of Lake Road and Sunset Road for approximately nine hours to bring in additional traffic crashes and lab experts to process the scene.
The investigation indicates that the child exited a nearby residence and entered the roadway unknown to family members. The child was struck by a vehicle traveling north bound on Lake Road between 4 a.m. and 4:41 a.m. The vehicles that traveled north bound near the time of the crash have been identified. The identified vehicles/operators have and continue to cooperate with the investigation.
Investigators from the sheriff’s office and Michigan State Police have been collaborating with the Gogebic County Prosecutor’s Office, Michigan State Police Forensics, Michigan State Police Crash Reconstructionist and the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office.
The incident is an active and ongoing investigation. Further details will be released pending completion of the investigation.
