ISHPEMING — René Goyen is a familiar face for customers at the Ishpeming McDonald’s, with her broad smile and name tag that reads “Superwoman.” Recently, she was recognized by her coworkers for an impressive 35 years of service between the Marquette and Ishpeming McDonald’s locations.

“I’m very proud of myself and what I do,” said Goyen, who works primarily in the lobby, keeping the restaurant clean and greeting customers on their way in.

Goyen started working at the McDonald’s in Marquette in 1991, in her late twenties.

“Sarah, my boss, hired me. I was so excited and got my first paycheck,” she recalled.

Goyen switched from the Marquette to the Ishpeming McDonald’s after five years and has been in Ishpeming ever since. Now she’s 62, and not slowing down anytime soon.

“I’m not gonna retire, no way,” said Goyen.

Known both for her positive and friendly attitude and for her past appearances on local news, Goyen has become a local celebrity. Her past employment anniversaries with McDonalds’ have earned her quite the collection of McDonald’s collectibles, including earrings, a ring, a hat, a backpack and a commemorative cup.

“Customers always say ‘You’re a famous star!'” said Goyen.

“My favorite part (of working at McDonald’s) is bussing tables, sweeping, mopping, taking out garbage and all of that … I love people and I’m kind to people. (Customers) always say this is the cleanest restaurant.”

Even after so many years, though, Goyen hasn’t gotten tired of the food. Her favorite item on the menu?

“The Big Mac.”
